Matthew recorded Jesus’ words, “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and give His life as a ransom for all.” We’ll revel in Matthew’s account of our Lord’s Passion which intricately weaves the salvific work of Christ, the desperate failure of man, and the richness of Jesus’ mercy. We’ll divide the Passion into five sections with a question from each section as the focal point. Attendees will join in studying these texts, receive outlines and detailed suggestions for midweek sermons, and delight in the mutual conversation and consolation of the brothers.
- “Is it I, Lord?”
- “Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels?”
- “Are you the Christ, the Son of God?”
- “Are you the King of the Jews?”
- “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
We’ll also explore the texts for Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil, and Easter.

He’s authored preaching resources for CPH, Concordia Pulpit Resources, and the Northern Illinois District. He’s spoken at the Good Shepherd Institute; pastoral conferences in the Oklahoma, Michigan, Central Illinois, and Northern Illinois Districts; and at several Doxology events. He’s written on pastoral care for children of divorce and for the lonely. He’s also explored the use of faithful art and the use of story in serving souls.
Pastor Fleming was a graduate assistant in Pastoral Ministry at Concordia Theological Seminary and has served as a pastor in the LCMS since 1987. He and Jo, his wife, have three adult children and three granddaughters.
